EMBT (Enhanced Main Battle Tank)

Rheinmetall and the KNDS group of Nexter and Krauss Maffei Wegman recently presented new tank demonstrators at Eurosatory 2022. Rheinmetall showcased the KF51 Panther, while KNDS presented a new version of the Enhanced Main Battle Tank (EMBT), which was first introduced in 2018. The EMBT is a combination of a Leopard 2A7 chassis and the turret of the Leclerc, and the new version features a purpose-built turret equipped with the Trophy APS, a remotely controlled 30mm autocannon, and a commander sight equipped with a 7.62mm MG. The main cannon is the CN120-26, which is fed by a 22-round autoloader. The new behemoth is largely unmodified Leopard 2A7, with only the front seeing improvements.

The Enhanced Main Battle Tank (EMBT)

The EMBT presented at Eurosatory 2022 is an experimental platform that features a four-person crew concept, which includes two men for the turret and two for the chassis. The turret is equipped with an evolutionary 120mm cannon and a new generation ammunition called Shard. The new turret is also equipped with a 30mm RCWS, which introduces counter-UAV capability. The EMBT has a completely new and reconfigurable MMI that allows dynamic task allocation and testing of "innovative crew concepts" with a variable number of crew stations, including the presence of a System Operator. This enables leveraging the full potential of an extensive sensors and effectors suite while progress is being made on AI technologies.

140mm ASCALON cannon

As a major player in the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) program, KNDS is also preparing for the future of the main armament by presenting the new ASCALON gun and ammunition concept. This innovative concept delivers performance levels that current technologies do not offer and has significant growth potential. The ASCALON gun is a product of the French company Nexter and has some exceptional key advantages. For example, a 140mm ASCALON cannon can reduce recoil power due to its ability to reduce firing momentum. In addition to being able to operate ammunition with a maximum length of 130 cm, the cannon has an extended ammunition range, taking advantage of the larger caliber. Guided ammunition allows engaging targets Beyond the Line of Sight and Non-Line of Sight. Experts say the cannon will have incredible power due to the internal pressure, which can range from 10 to 13 megajoules.

KNDS has designed ASCALON with an open architecture to serve as a basis for cooperative development within the framework of the MGCS program, laying the foundations for the future standard of European tank gun and ammunition. The EMBT is ready for the future integration of ASCALON and other turrets. Overall, the EMBT is a formidable tank that will be in direct competition with Rheinmetall's KF51 Panther. The EMBT combines the best of both worlds, with the Leopard 2A7 chassis and the Leclerc turret, and the addition of the ASCALON gun and other features make it a valuable asset for any military looking to modernize their fleet.
